Men's Track
School javelin record holder and 2001 NCAA champion competed twice early last season before a knee injury forced him to miss rest of year. Still ranked seventh on year-end U.S. list in 2002, and second among collegians. Leads list of collegiate returnees after last year’s top-three ranked throwers matriculated. Ranks sixth all-time in Pac-10 history with new javelin introduced in 1986 and needs mark of 259-10 or better to move into third place. 2001-02: NCAA Automatic Qualifier. Opened year with win in Montana-Weber State Triangular (247-0, 75.29m), and followed with another NCAA automatic mark en route to his second straight Texas Relays win (242-11), before tearing the ACL in his knee on his fourth throw in the Austin meet in April. One of four Pac-10 All-Academic First Team selections for Ducks. 2000-01: NCAA Champion. The former transfer and walk-on, polished off an incredible storyline with an NCAA title and school record (252-10) at home in the NCAA Championships - with his winning mark his third preliminary throw after fouling his first two attempts. After entering year with preseason best of 225-3, was above 230 feet in seven of eight meets, and above 240 feet in four meets. Ended season in Eugene a month later in the USA Championships (seventh, 234-2), ranking as the third collegiate finisher even with his second-lowest mark of the year. In May, won Oregon's sixth conference javelin title (240-10), with a foul late in the competition that was less than two feet off the right sector line past the 260-foot mark. Twice named Pac-10 Athlete of the Week, first for his collegiate regular-season leading mark from the Texas Relays (245-9, and second behind German Olympian Boris Henry), and second, for his runner-up mark from the Oregon Invitational (second, 241-11). His NCAA mark earned Oregon its seventh NCAA title in the event and was a foot better than another NCAA champ, Art Skipper, and his previous school best of 251-8 from 1992. The mark ranks him sixth all-time in Pac-10 history with the top five less than five feet away. 1999-2000: Pac-10 Qualifier. Missed Pac-10 points by less than three feet (ninth, 203-10). Was above 200 feet in all six appearances, including regular season best of 215-10. In July, hiked personal best by almost 10 feet to 225-3 (68.65m) in the High Octane Invitational in Connecticut, and missed Olympic Trials qualifying mark by less than three feet (228-0, 69.50m). Ranked 39th in U.S., and second nationally among freshmen. Before Oregon: Attended Oregon State as a freshman in 1998-99 and competed for its track club before transferring to Oregon in fall of 1999. Traveled on his own to the 1999 U.S. Junior Championships and was rewarded with then-personal best throw (fourth, 207-11). Prep: Finished third as a senior in 1998 4A state meet (198-3) before claiming the 1998 Junior Olympic title and junior All-America honors later in 1999. Owned prep best of 205-7. Played football for two years, seeing action at kicker, quarterback and linebacker. Graduated as valedictorian of class and was National Honor Society member.
