Softball Stuns No. 9 Florida State, Wins 3-1

Feb. 7, 2003

Box Score

TALLAHASEE, Fla. - Oregon senior Alyssa Laux drove in two runs in the top of the seventh inning and freshman pitcher Amy Harris pitched a gem as the Ducks upset No. 9 Florida State at the Seminole Softball Complex in Tallahasse, Fla. With the win, Oregon improves to 6-1 overall while Florida State falls to 3-2 overall. The Ducks have now won three-straight against the Seminoles.

"This was a huge team win," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We got a key hit by a veteran player and outstanding pitching performances from Amy [Harris] and Andrea [Vidlund]. Our young players did a great job of getting timely hits to put us in a position to win."

Florida State struck early on a two-out RBI double by second baseman Brandi Stuart that scored Natasha Jacob in the bottom of the first inning, but did not score again and committed a costly error to open the door for Oregon.

After Seminole pitcher Casey Hunter walked Oregon sophomore Mari Lyn Petrick (Hillsboro) in the top of the fourth inning, junior catcher Jenn Poore broke up Hunter's no-hitter with a single to left center field to put runners at first and second base for the Ducks. Freshman Beth Boskovich followed with a single to right field and Petrick advanced to third and scored on a throwing error by Florida State right fielder Shundra Colzie to tie the game, 1-1.

Harris held her own in the bottom of the fourth inning when Florida State threatened to take the lead. After walking Lesley Palmer to start the inning, Harris struck out catcher Elisa Vasquez for the first out. Florida State shortstop Tatiana George hit a two-strike single to left field to put runners at first and second. Harris then struck out first baseman Beth Wade for the second out and freshman Breanne Sabol made a leaping catch on a line drive hit by Shandra Colzie to end the inning.

Oregon loaded the bases with three freshman - Boskovich (single), Jackie Eliades (single) and Dani Baird (walk) - in the top of the seventh inning. Laux drove in two of them with the game winning single up the middle.

Boskovich led the Ducks offensively, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a run scored while Harris improved to 2-1 on the season and Vidlund picked her second save of the day.
