No. 23 Softball Remains Unbeaten At NIST With 3-0 Win Over San Jose State

March 7, 2003

Box Score

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The 23rd-ranked Oregon softball team defeated San Jose State, 3-0, at the National Invitational Softball Tournament Friday evening to remain unbeaten in the tournament and improve to 14-5 overall this season. The Spartans dropped to 6-13 overall.

"I'm happy that we finished the day with two wins," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I thought our pitching was very solid in the second game and we had some nice offensive efforts from Alyssa [Laux] and Breanne [Sabol]."

Sabol finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two doubles and a stolen base while Laux was 3-for-4 with three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Laux hit her first home run of the season in the top of the third inning, scoring Sabol and giving the Ducks a 2-0 lead.

"I felt relaxed when I was hitting today," Sabol said. "I tried not to worry about my swing or what I wasn't doing. I focused on just swinging the bat."

Sabol and Laux accounted for all of the Ducks' scoring versus San Jose State as Sabol doubled to left center in the top of the seventh inning and Laux drove her in with a single to right field to put Oregon ahead 3-0. The Spartans had four hits in the game and were unable to score through seven innings. Oregon is now 4-2 in shutouts.

Oregon freshman Beth Boskovich and sophomore Erin Goodell added a hit each while junior pitcher Anissa Meashintubby picked up the win to improve to 3-1 overall this season and senior Andrea Vidlund picked up her third save of the season.

With its two wins today, Oregon earned the No. 1 seed in its pool and will play No. 24 Minnesota Saturday at noon.
