Senior Andrea Vidlund Earns All-America Honors After Record Breaking Softball Season

May 22, 2003

EUGENE - Oregon senior Andrea Vidlund (Citrus Heights, Calif.) has earned third-team All-America honors after a season in which she etched her name in the Oregon record books and nearly guided the Ducks to their first Women's College World Series appearance since 1989.

The senior pitcher/utility player set a single season record for home runs with 16 and now holds the all-time home run record with 37. Vidlund is currently ranked eighth in the nation in home runs per game and defensively, her 11 saves leads the nation.

While her offensive power led the Ducks this season - her 42 RBI is the fourth-highest total for a single season at Oregon - she consistently came through for Oregon in the circle as well. Despite pitching just 43.2 innings, Vidlund racked up 39 strikeouts and now ranks seventh all-time with 226 career strikeouts. She picked up six wins to go along with her 11 saves.

After a stellar season in which the Ducks finished 37-19 overall, 10-11 Pacific-10 Conference, Vidlund now ranks in the top-10 in runs scored (8th, 104), hits (9th, 182), RBI (T4th, 121) and wins (7th, 33). Her offensive power combined with her experience on the mound helped guide Oregon to a third place finish in the Pac-10 en route to its first postseason appearance in two years.

Vidlund was a unanimous selection to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament team after leading the field in hits (11), RBI (13), home runs (4) and total bases (25) as Oregon went all the way to the championship game.
